Operational Excellence – Strategy for Sustainable Businesses
Operational excellence (OE) is a competitive advantage that helps to increase production flexibility, improve customer responsiveness and also minimizes cost. In order to sensitize next generation managers towards the same, Fortune Institute of International Business facilitated deliberations amongst Industry Experts under the umbrella of Operational Excellence Conference 2013 on 31st of August 2013.
Our panelists represented various industries spanning from healthcare to shipping, giving the students an idea of how Operational Excellence is not confided to just industries or Multi-National Companies but have been a part of the Indian Culture for more than a century now. The Conference hosted speakers like Mr Subhendu Roy (A.T. Kearney), Mr Anil Sachdeva (TQMI), Mr. Sunil Kapoor (Fortis Healthcare), Mr. Kamal Bajaj (Profine Group) and representatives from the Mumbai Dabbawalas.
Situational Excellence when practiced as a way of life leads to Operational Excellence for everyone at all times. This was demonstrated by our key speaker Mr. Subhendu Roy, Principal (Consumer Industries and Retail Practice), A.T. Kearney. By laying emphasis on collaboration and tailored approach, he channeled the young managers towards frequent planning and redesigning supply chain models. He also highlighted the fact that being operationally flexible is another way of achieving Operational Excellence. A Key Statement by Mr. Subhendu Roy “Organizations want to keep the backend operations simple in order to achieve Operational Excellence at all times.” opened the discussion for first session.
The panel deliberated on sustainable & improvised supply chain strategy in operational excellence. The Panelists Mr. Anil Sachdeva (TQMI), Mr. Sunil Kapoor (Fortis Healthcare), Mr. Kamal Bajaj (Profine Group) and moderator Dr. Sharad Chaturvedi (Professor), FIIB discussed how the improvised supply chain strategy has helped industries across the panoramic view of Healthcare and shipping,
Post lunch, a special session was planned where the aim was to demystify the Operational Success of Mumbai Dabbawalas. For the session, the President and General Secretary of the Organisation, Mr. Raghunath Medge and Mr. Gangaram Talekar respectively had quite a story tell on what makes a humble organization like the Mumbai Dabbawalas a certified six sigma organization with an error rate of only one in 16 million! The session was moderated by Dr. Sadia Ali (Professor-Operations), FIIB.
During the two hour session, the speakers shared with the students that Mumbai Dabbawalas work with a simple goal- To provide excellent services without any technological backup. They explained how the simple three layer colour coding has helped the Dabbawalas to successfully handle 4,00,000 transactions a day without any error. Mr. Megde shared that the secret behind their efficiency (Six Sigma) was “Four of those six sigma’s are actually not of the Dabbawala. Two belong to the Mumbai trains and two to our cycles.” He explained how the Mumbai trains form a vital part of their supply chain and how the train strikes in 1974 were the only time when they weren’t able to deliver the dabbas. Otherwise in the 123 years of its establishment, nothing has been able to slow them down- not the 26/11 Episode or the 2005 floods. Ask them why the two sigma to the cycles and they answer- “Cycles help us get to the stations quickly and cut through the traffic easily to make it to the 10:30 am local”
After the enriching sessions, the students had a chance to interact with the speakers and ask them questions to understand the subject better. As the Conference concluded, Faculty and students had a photo session with the humble six sigma experts to end the same at an extremely high note.
